Succulent winter salad
Uncertain how to enjoy kale other than in a soup? Milbridge’s Women’s Health Resource Library has an easy, appetizing recipe called “Massaged Kale Salad.”
Wash 1 bunch of kale, remove the tough midribs and slice thinly the remaining leaves. Meanwhile, mix 4 Tbsps. olive oil, 1 Tbsp. soy sauce and tamari, 1 tsp. maple syrup, 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil and 1-2 tsps. of a fresh, hot pepper (optional).
Pour dressing over kale. Massage with your hands for 5-10 minutes. Let sit and marinate for 10 minutes. Add additional ingredients such as grated carrots, chopped radishes, lettuce, sprouts, raisins, nuts and sesame seeds. For more recipes, visit whrl.org.
In Ellsworth, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (119 Bucksport Road) will continue to provide essential food staples for local residents in need, but will provide drive-up service instead of the public entering the pantry as of Wednesday, March 18. The public can contact the pantry ahead and volunteers will do their best to meet those needs. They can either fill out an order form over the phone or fill it out, put it is a designated box and wait while it is being filled. A shopping cart will be prepared and brought out to the parking lot. Families then can load their goods into their vehicle. Carts will be cleaned between each pick-up.
