Maine gardener to share wisdom and insights

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Public Library will host author and gardener Lisa Colburn as its featured speaker starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Riverview Room.

Colburn, author of “The Maine Garden Journal: Insider Secrets from Maine People Who Love to Put Their Hands in the Dirt,” draws from the wisdom and experience of Maine ornamental gardeners from Fort Kent to Kittery.

In her presentation, Colburn will offer a wealth of plant-related information. She will talk about the most recommended trees, shrubs, perennials, spring bulbs, tropical plants, as well as houseplants. She will share her knowledge of the best garden centers in Maine and explain why some Maine gardeners order plants from online and print catalogs.

Colburn was born and raised in a rural community in northern Maine where it seems everyone gardens. Through the years and many careers, her “constant,” has been gardening.

Colburn has a passion for very tiny alpine plants and extremely large-leafed plants. Her ornamental and food gardens continue to expand yearly because “there are always new plants to try.”
