ELLSWORTH — SCHERZO \skertsō\, a new adult chorus, will start up later this month at the Moore Community Center. The purpose of the choir, geared for adults aged 50-plus, is mainly to have fun singing.

Spearheaded jointly by Friends in Action and the Ellsworth Community Music Institute, SCHERZO will be directed by Gina Schuh-Turner. A professional singer, actress and voice teacher, Schuh-Turner has taught singing for more than 20 years. An Ellsworth resident, she currently teaches locally and online to students from Ellsworth to South Korea.

As a choral conductor and music director, Schuh-Turner works with both adults and children. Her career highlights include being an original cast member of Denver’s longest running musical, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” for 4.5 years (almost 2,000 performances) and performing off-Broadway in “The Fantasticks,” working with the show’s creators, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Her regional performance awards include the Marlowe Award for Best Actress in a Children’s Show, and she is a two-time recipient of Westward’s Best of Denver Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Singing sessions will begin Feb. 25, running for 10 weeks, from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at the Moore Community Center Theater.

No auditions are required to join the chorus, nor is there any cost although donations to ECMI are appreciated. The Maine Expansion Arts Fund, administered by Maine Community Foundation, is supporting the program. Kimberly Battaline will provide piano accompaniment.

Singers will work toward a public concert at the program’s culmination. Mixed genres will be presented including show tunes, oldies, Americana, etc. Rehearsals will include a one-time visit and sing-along class with Grammy Award winner and Brooklin pianist and composer Paul Sullivan.
