Acadia Choral Society

The Acadia Choral Society will perform its holiday concert Dec. 3, 4, and 11 at churches in Hancock, Bar Harbor and Ellsworth.

BAR HARBOR — The Acadia Choral Society, which has a broad reach drawing singers and concert-goers from far afield, will perform Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and Dieterich Buxtehude’s Christmas cantata, “Das Neugeborne Kindelein” (“The Newborn Little Child”), at 3 p.m. Dec. 3, 4 and 11, respectively at the Union Congregational Church of Hancock, St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor and the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.

The 45-member community chorus’s holiday program features two major works from the same music period but differing in style characteristic of the composers. Many will know of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” but his “Gloria” was written for debut at the girls orphanage school in Vienna while he was its music director. The work’s exciting and varied musical styles are blended with lush harmonies making it always a delight to hear.
