Subscribers to have full access to

Dear Readers,

Starting Jan. 1, we will begin charging for unlimited access to our website,

Ellsworth American subscribers, both print and digital, will have full access to the site as part of their package. Non-subscribers can read up to three articles each month for free before being prompted to pay.

Like many newspapers nationwide, The American for several years has been giving away its online content. But the journalists who produce those articles and photographs, and the employees who maintain our website, do not work for free and their work should not be given away. This fact has dawned on the newspaper industry as a whole. The Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal, Waterville Sentinel and Sun Journal in Lewiston permit only a handful of free articles each month … then down comes the paywall. The Boston Globe and New York Times also cap the number of free articles allowed online.

We believe readers who appreciate local news about our communities understand the need to support that coverage. And we’re not asking a lot. Non-subscribers will be notified when they’ve reached their quota of free articles for the month. At that point, they’ll be encouraged to sign up. A digital subscription is just $2.99 per month and includes access to the website and weekly e-edition. In appreciation, we’re also offering all subscribers a savings card with discounts at area businesses.

For those of you who are regular online readers, we hope you have been enjoying the new site we launched this fall. We’ve invested in our online presence and look forward to informing and entertaining you in the future.

Current subscribers soon will receive a letter containing a username and password for the site. You’ll find the login button in the upper right-hand corner of

There will continue to be unlimited online access to our classified listings, obituaries, calendar and real estate sites.
