Deer Isle boy dies in dirt bike crash



DEER ISLE − A 13-year-old Deer Isle boy died on Monday, July 1, after a dirt bike crash on the Eggemoggin Road in Little Deer Isle, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

John E. Hovey, IV, who was wearing a helmet and protective clothing, was riding the 2001 Suzuki east on the Eggemoggin Road around 7:41 p.m., when it went off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole. Hovey was ejected from the bike and died at the scene.

Deputy Jeff McFarland is investigating the crash. He was assisted at the scene by Deputy Christopher Sargent, Lt. Corey Bagley and Chief Deputy Patrick Kane. Deer Isle Fire Department and Memorial Ambulance responded to assist with treatment and traffic control.

The crash followed on the heels of another fatal accident in Hancock County. Maine State Police have released the name of a 47-year-old Ellsworth man who died as a result of a motorcycle crash June 23.

According to a press release, Harry Moore was traveling on the Toddy Pond Road in Surry on June 23 when a large gust of wind pushed the bike off the roadway, where it hit a ditch before going airborne.

Moore was able to speak with Trooper Dana Austin at the scene, according to the release. Another motorcyclist on the road at the time of crash corroborated the story.

Moore was transported to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital and later to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he passed away.
