Hyundai Elantra N (2)

Two thoughts rattle around my brain as I leave busy Kennebunkport on a hot August evening with Hyundai’s latest testament to its continued interest in building special internal-combustion-engined vehicles — ahead of its plunge into a rapid EV buildout.

This Elantra N — with the letter N signifying Hyundai’s sportiest version of any current model so endowed — is nothing like your Aunt Martha’s staid Elantra four-door. From the more aggressive front fascia, with a color-accented splitter that continues along the rocker panels back to the rear diffuser surrounding dual exhausts cannons, all complemented by a large rear spoiler, low-profile sport rubber, and large red brake calipers, this body suggests that Hyundai wants to be a player in the compact sedan segment long dominated by Civic Si, Jetta GLI and Subaru WRX.
