GSA, EHS girls’ cross-country finish 2nd at weekend meets; Penfold wins again



ELLSWORTH — The weekend’s cross-country slate brought runners to a local meet in Hancock County and to another all the way across the state, and runners in both locations had successful weekends.

The George Stevens Academy girls’ team earned a runner-up finish for the second week in a row, placing second behind Orono at the Bucksport Invitational. The Eagles earned 51 points as a team.

Although Mary Richardson didn’t race for the Eagles, Eliza Broughton won the girls’ race with a time of 19 minutes, 51 seconds. Teammate Zeya Lorio took sixth with a time of 21:30.

On the boys’ side, Deer Isle-Stonington’s Brendan Penfold earned his second straight first-place finish this season with a winning time of 16:25. GSA’s Isaac Wardwell and Caden Mattson finished 10th and 11th, respectively.

At the Presque Isle Invitational, Ellsworth’s girls’ team finished second place among 10 teams. Sophomore Trinity Montigny finished third with a time of 21:45, and Abby Mazgaj crossed the finish line in 22:13 to finish eighth.

The Ellsworth boys earned 89 points to finish third out of 11 teams. The Eagles’ Matt Frost ran the race in 19:02 to finish a team-best sixth, and teammate Matt Shea was close behind him in ninth.
