Making Surry an Even
Better Place to Live
The Surry Community
Improvement Association was founded in 1970 “to promote community
spirit and improve the quality of life for all residents of Surry by
providing information, education, support and social activities,”
while continuing “to explore ways to make Surry an even better place
to live.”

According to its
19th president, Albert Small, the group recognizes citizens who have
made outstanding contributions to the community; provides
scholarships for higher education to Surry students; supports the
Surry school, providing volunteers and a discretionary fund for
student needs that arise; offers a Christmas Angels program, that
meets the needs of disadvantaged children in Surry; provides
transportation to those who need it to do shopping or get to
doctors’ appointments; and has a welcome committee that visits and
offers a gift to new residents.
The Improvement
Association holds monthly meetings on Monday nights at the Surry
school, with a speaker on “subjects of interest to the local
community.”
After meetings
refreshments are served, and “people always stay to chat and visit
with each other,” said Small, who calls this an “opportunity to pull
a community together and get to know our neighbors.”
The group also
hosts an annual forum to give Surry residents an opportunity to
review the town warrant and discuss the school budget before the
town meeting. This meeting, which gives citizens “an early look-see”
on issues facing the town, always has a good turnout, said Small.
The Improvement
Association raises funds to support its activities through yard
sales and suppers, including its recent Harvest Supper.
The group is open
to Surry residents of all ages.
“We’re growing, and
we’re always looking for new members,” Small said. “It’s a great
little community organization, and we’re very proud of it.” |
