Wesmac, the Industrial Heart of Surry

Founded in 1984, Wesmac, a custom boat building company located on Route 172, represents the industrial heart of Surry.

Depending on the time of year, the company employs 20 to 35 full-time workers throughout the year.

When the company started, its designs were being built in boat shops from Kittery to Jonesport.

In 1993, Wesmac bought property on Route 172 and centralized its operations and workforce in Surry.

Since then, Wesmac has been sending hulls and tops to boatbuilders from Maine to Miami, as well as custom finishing boats to completion.

The company has earned a reputation for its innovative, lightweight, high tech hull designs, ranging from 36 to 54 feet.

“We keep a lot of other shops busy,” Wesmac President Steve Wessel said of the kits made in Surry.

The boats, whether finished at Wesmac or some other boat shop, serve a wide range of purposes.

Wesmac boats are used as work boats, pleasure boats, Coast Guard-certified passenger boats, training boats, fly bridge cruisers, research boats and more.

Wesmac boats cruise waters up and down the East Coast, as well as Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands and beyond.

“We send them everywhere,” Wessel said.
