   Down East magazine tried to pump up Sorrento in the late 1980s as “the best-kept secret on the Maine coast.” It still is a secret. Sorrento holds fast to its origins as a private and pristine place.

Noyes Knows What’s Fair, What’s Flair
   Beppie Noyes, at 83, is out and about every day in Sorrento, her adopted town by marriage. Twice daily, in fact, she walks two separate circuits from Tasseltop, her old-style home next door to the town’s old-style library.

“Snooping” through Sorrento’s Summer Secrets
   Sturgis Haskins, a resident so local that others remember calling him “Sturgie” as a child, did his part 30 years ago to bring Sorrento’s history to life: He was the founding president of the Sullivan-Sorrento Historical Society.

1800 (circa): Union Church is built.
  
1888 (circa): Sorrento’s grand resort Hotel Sorrento is built.
  
1890: Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is dedicated on Aug. 24
  
1895: Sorrento incorporates, legally separating itself from Sullivan.
  
1900: Population of Sorrento is 117.
  
1906: Fire destroys Hotel Sorrento.
  
1910: Population of Sorrento is 147.
  
1920: The Sorrento Inn and the Arcadia accommodate travelers.
