Acadia Repertory Turns 30
   A weathered, driftwood sign on Route 102 marks the Acadia Repertory Theatre’s summer home. The original sign, painted 30 years ago by the wife of the theater’s founder at her kitchen table, now hangs in the box office.

Milestones

   1789 – Town of Mount Desert incorporated on Feb. 16. At this time, it included the entire island and surrounding offshore islands.
   1796 – Town divided into two towns on Feb 22. Mount Desert in the south and in the north, and Eden that would eventually be renamed Bar Harbor.
   1821 – First post office established in Somesville.
   1837 – The Freeman Congregational Church built on the Pretty Marsh line.
   1838 – Third division of the town of Mount Desert when Bartlett’s Island, Hardwood and Robinson’s (now called Tinker’s) were set off and called Seaville. In 1859, this was repealed with Bartlett’s going to the town of Mount Desert and the others to Tremont.
   1848 – Fourth division of town creating Tremont.
   1876 – The Congregational Church of Somesville organized.
