There’s No Place Like Home

To many, going to Orland simply means going to HOME.

The non-profit organization, Homeworkers Organized for More Employment, is a refuge in many ways.

Since 1970 it has served primarily as a safe shelter for women and families in need.

HOME’s main site, at the corner of Route 1 and Schoolhouse Road, has several buildings. There is a shingle mill, which was damaged by fire last month, and will be rebuilt. There is also a lumber mill, garage, food bank and soup kitchen, craft store, day care center, learning center with adult and literacy classes and a weaving house.

There are also shelters elsewhere, in both Orland and Bucksport. Emmaus, the homeless shelter in Ellsworth, is connected to HOME, as well.
