Craig Brook Hatchery Has National Status

The dedication of the $11.8 million facility at the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in Orland on Sept. 28 suggests something very new in town.

But the hatchery, the first permanent hatchery for the preservation of the Atlantic salmon in the country, was established in 1889. About 12,000 tourists visit the hatchery each year, not including school groups. They are always welcome on the first Sunday of each November, which staffers call Spawning Spectacular.
