The Sea Coast Mission represents Bar Harbor’s blending of the past
and the present. Founded in 1905, the non-profit organization that
supports Maine’s coastal and island communities makes its home in
one of the mansions that gave Bar Harbor its reputation. The Sea
Coast Mission started in Bar Harbor’s era of elegance, and today is
a reminder of the town’s ocean-oriented past. Each June, the Sea
Coast Mission presents the so-called “Blessing of the Fleet” at the
town pier. Those who “went down to the sea and failed to return” are
honored in the organization’s Seafarer’s Memorial Service. It makes
for one of Bar Harbor’s finer moments in a summer season crowded
with all kinds of tourist-oriented activities. This one is for the
locals. |
