BROOKSVILLE — Ivyjean Holloway Mesteller, 96, passed away May 19, 2013, surrounded by loved ones at her home. She was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter and only child of Harry Raymond and Ivy Genevieve (Laird) Holloway.
Following graduation from Newark State Teachers College in 1938, Jean taught art in the New Jersey public schools for nine years. In 1947, Jean and her late husband opened Pine Florist in Verona, N.J. Jean’s natural artistic talent translated well into beautiful floral arrangements, bouquets and corsages. A member of the New Jersey Florist Association, Jean lectured and gave demonstrations throughout New Jersey on behalf of the group. In 1982, Jean returned to Brooksville, where she was able to dote on her grandchildren, tend her flower gardens and live out her long and prosperous life. While living in New Jersey, Jean was an active member of the Verona United Methodist Church, and upon moving, united in membership with the West Brooksville Congregational Church, UCC, serving both congregations in various capacities over the years. Jean was an active member of the Brooklin Garden Club, and especially enjoyed flower therapy and Majabigwaduce Chapter, DAR. She was very proud to be the Boston Post Cane holder for the town of Brooksville.
Jean is survived by daughters, Susan Smedal and husband, Harald, Pamela Capurso and husband, Paul, all of Brooksville; special daughter, Pauline Mundy and husband, John, of Independence, Mo.; grandchildren, Matthew Smedal, Katrina Smedal, David Rackliffe, and Jody Rackliffe, Pamela Sue Dudley, John Mundy, Brian Mundy, Allen Mundy and families. Jean was predeceased by her parents; and beloved husband of 67 years, Stephen L. Mesteller.
