George Stevens Academy sailors Nicholas Steenberg and Clover Slagle tune up in Castine Harbor last Thursday. The Eagle sailing team opened its spring seaon on Saturday with a win in Marblehead, Mass.

BLUE HILL — It didn’t take long this spring for the George Stevens Academy sailing team to show off its mettle.

Last Saturday, the team traveled to Marblehead, Mass., to sail a series of team races in the annual UpEast Regatta. In a pair of best-of-three series, the Eagles swept both Marblehead and MDI 2-0. The MDI Trojans beat Marblehead 2-1.

GSA’s performance was remarkable.

The eight Eagle sailors who traveled to Marblehead spent about 90 blustery minutes on the water at Maine Maritime Academy last Thursday, racing 420 dinghies against a small contingent from the MMA team. That was their only practice this spring.

This Saturday, GSA and MDI scheduled to send teams to Portland for the Ft. Gorges fleet race regatta hosted by Falmouth High School. Weather permitting, the Eagles and Trojans plan to square off for their first dual regatta of the season on Tuesday, April 23, at the MDI Sailing Center in Southwest Harbor.
