Maine Fishermen’s Forum Opens Thursday in Rockport March 4, 2009 by Nicole Ouellette on News, Waterfront ROCKPORT — The 34th annual edition of the Maine Fishermen’s Forum opens Thursday, March 5, at the Samoset Resort. The largest event of its kind in New England, the forum brings together harvesters, fish farmers, scientists, state and federal fisheries regulators and members of the state Legislature and congressional delegation for three days of intense seminars and discussions about the myriad issues that confront the commercial fishing industry. The seminar gets under way with a timely topic — “Fisheries Economic Survival 101.” The seminar will bring together experts on finance, marketing, “green” fisheries operations and other topics of critical interest to industry members. The forum will hold some 30 seminars on topics as diverse as local management options for the scallop fishery, conservation of river herring such as shad and alewives and lobster boat racing. A trade show will include more than 100 exhibitors. The forum opens at 9 a.m. Thursday with the final event being a banquet and dance, set for 6 p.m. on Saturday at which the scholarship winners will be announced and the Maine Lobstermen’s Association will present its Marine Patrol Officer of the Year award.
