Changes Are Coming To Maine Shrimp Fishery

ELLSWORTH — Maine shrimp fishermen waiting for the regulatory shoe to drop won’t have to wait much longer.

On Oct. 31, appropriately enough that’s Halloween, the Northern Shrimp Advisory Panel of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) will meet in New Hampshire for what is likely to be an all but final look at the 2012 shrimp stock assessment that will determine its recommendations for the total allowable catch (TAC) for the 2012-2013 shrimp fishing season.

The panel and the Northern Shrimp Section will meet again in late November or early December to review the stock assessment and establish its specifications for the 2012-2013 fishery. Preliminary indications are that the TAC could be substantially lower than it was last time around.
