Tremont Man Charged With Theft of Cash from Shaw’s

ELLSWORTH — Police said a 33-year-old Tremont man was arrested Saturday night after walking into Shaw’s supermarket on High Street and demanding cash.

Shaun Parsons is being held at the Hancock County Jail on a charge of Class B theft.

Ellsworth Police Sgt. Glenn Moshier said Sunday that a man later identified as Parsons walked into Shaw’s sometime before 8:30 Saturday night, approached a Shaw’s employee and demanded cash, saying he had a gun.

The man’s face was partially covered during the incident.

Moshier said the Shaw’s employee notified a manager who gave an undisclosed amount of cash to the man who then left on foot.

Moshier said “a couple of good citizens” observed what was happening and “kept track” of the man. When police arrived shortly after 8:30, Parsons was swiftly apprehended. Some clothing and a water pistol were recovered nearby. Moshier said Parsons had “ditched” the items after he left the store. Moshier said Parsons had displayed no weapon during the incident at Shaw’s.

In October of 2011, Parsons was pulled from his burning car by Ellsworth Police Officer Andrew Weatherbee. Parsons’ car had overturned on Bayside Road and caught fire. Weatherbee, who had responded to the alert, used his baton to break the back window of the car and hauled Parsons to safety.

“It’s a bad ending to a good story,” Moshier said.

The arresting officer was Dan Owens. He was assisted by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. Det. Dotty Small is investigating.

Parsons was denied bail. He will be arraigned Monday.
