ELLSWORTH — Fire of undetermined origin caused extensive damage to the 1820 main house at Birdsacre on High Street.

The 6 p.m. blaze brought out firefighters from Ellsworth and Lamoine, closing down High Street from McDonald’s south.

The fire appeared confined to the main house, built by the father of Birdsacre’s inspiration, Cordeila Stanwood, in 1820. Firefighters were cutting a vent hole in the roof at 6:30 p.m., to let out the smoke that had already clouded the night sky.

The nearby bird sanctuary appeared unthreatened.
