MDI has teacher of year nominee

BAR HARBOR — Christiane Cullens, an English teacher at Mount Desert Island High School, is one of 14 nominees for the 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year award.

The Maine Department of Education will announce the winner in September.

Cullens was nominated for the award by an MDI High committee that included administrators, teachers, a student and a parent, a few of whom spoke at a reception in her honor on Monday.

Cullens lives in Surry. She had not held a teaching job before coming to MDI High in 1998.

“This school and this community have really grown me up to the teacher that I am today,” she said. “I could not ever do what I do nearly as well without the kind of flexibility that this school has offered me. I would have been shut down a long time ago because of my practices and the way that I kind of do things outside the lines sometimes.”
