Bucksport council struggles with gun permit information request

BUCKSPORT — It’s moot now, but when it was an issue town councilors struggled with the need to comply with the Bangor Daily News’ request for the names, addresses and birthdates of all concealed weapon permit holders in Bucksport.

On Feb. 13, the Bangor Daily News filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to all Maine police agencies for the information about concealed carry permit holders.

Having provoked a firestorm of protest, the BDN rescinded its request on Feb. 15.

The Town Council, meeting Feb. 14 before the request was withdrawn, heard from Bucksport Police Chief Sean Geagan.

Geagan said he understood the request was part of a law that he needed to comply with, but he wanted to bring it to the council’s attention, so the councilors could discuss how to proceed.

“I don’t feel comfortable with releasing that information, but I also don’t want to get the town in trouble by violating the law either,” Councilor Mike Ormsby said.

Town Manager Mike Brennan said he would be willing to call to the town attorney regarding the matter.
