Frederick Lief Gylfe, 102, died Nov. 6,
1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility after a brief illness. He
was born in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 14, 1897, the fourth son of
Gustav and Helma Gylfe.
He lived in Winter Harbor from 1991 until 1998. He was a member of
the American Legion for more than 75 years and the Medinah Temple of
the Shrine for more than 50 years. His military service was spent as a
noncommissioned officer in the headquarters company of the 108th
Infantry, 27th Division New York National Guard, from 1916 to 1919. He
saw service on the Mexican border in 1916-1917. In World War I his
unit was attached to the British Fourth Army in Northern France and
Belgium and took part in battles at St. Quentin and Ypres. He was
recently awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in
recognition of his service on French soil. After being discharged from
the Army, he pursued a career in the printing trade until his
retirement in 1964.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Julina Gylfe of Prospect
Harbor; his son, Carl and his wife, Mary, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.;
and three grandchildren, Patricia of New York City, David of
Winston-Salem, N.C., and Suzanne of Chicago.
