Matson Moorehead Lord, 83, of Yarmouth, died May 6, 1999, at his home after a
brief illness. He was born June 9, 1915, in Bucksport, a son of Ralph Howard and Mattie
Soper Lord.
He attended schools in Bucksport, was president of his senior class and graduated as
valedictorian from Bucksport High School in 1934. He graduated from Bowdoin College in
1938. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
On June 24, 1939, Mr. Lord married Audrey Atwood McIntire. They were married 53 years
prior to her death on June 28, 1992.
Mr. Lord worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 35 years as a field service
representative and retired in March 1977.
Mr. Lord was a Mason and belonged to Hiram Lodge No. 180, South Portland, also
Winnegance Chapter No. 119, Yarmouth.
Mr. Lord loved genealogy and was very active in The Sons and Daughters of Nathan Lord,
serving as vice president from 1979-1985, president from 1987-1995, and corresponding
secretary from 1995-present. He was also a member of the Maine Genealogical Society, the
Maine Historical Society, the Yarmouth Historical Society and the Maine State Museum.
Mr. Lord was an ardent beekeeper and a member of the Maine State Bee Association,
serving as vice president from 1982-1983 and membership chairman from 1980-1985, and
honored as Bee Keeper of the Year in 1991. He also belonged to the Cumberland Chapter No.
1 MSBA, serving as president from 1984-1985 and 1989-1990.
Mr. Lord also enjoyed growing apples and belonged to the Maine Pomological Society. He
was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth. Mr. Lord also belonged
to the following organizations: United Ostomy Association, Southern Maine Senior Citizens,
Sportsmans Alliance of Maine, AARP and the NRA.
Surviving are his three daughters, Alana L. Dugan of South Portland, Susan F. Little of
Indianapolis and Melissa A. Kaufman of Yarmouth; a brother, Albert L. Lord of Orland; six
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service was held May 12, 1999, at the First Parish Congregational Church in
Yarmouth, with the Revs. Lorain
R. Giles and Stephen A. Little officiating. Private burial at Riverside Cemetery,
