Gladiator Victorious Again

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Saturday’s 13th Annual Southwest Harbor Rendezvous attracted more Friendship sloops than it has in any of the past three years. But by the end, it was just a two-boat race.

When it was over Gladiator, the 1902 vintage 32-footer owned by Bill and Caroline Zuber of Friendship, outdistanced the field of eight to capture its second win in three years.

Beating to windward from the Greenings Ledge nun buoy to the finish line between Clark Point and the northwest corner of Greenings Island, Gladiator’s final starboard tack was good enough to beat Resolute, a 28-footer owned by Charlie and Maria Burnham of Essex, Mass., by 40 seconds.

Gladiator, which beat Jarvis Newman’s Tradition by nine seconds in 2003, has won two Southwest Harbor Rendezvous in five chances by less than one minute combined.

Chrissy, the 30-foot, 1912 sloop owned by Harold and Kim Burnham of Essex, Mass., held the lead over the first four marks in the roughly four-mile course, but she fell back to third by the finish line, nearly two minutes behind Resolute.

The 1899 vintage, 30-foot sloop Alice E, recently purchased by Tremont’s Karl Brunner and Kristen Ramos for their business, Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters, was the top Mount Desert Island finisher. She placed fourth, roughly 40 seconds behind Chrissy and more than three minutes behind Gladiator.

The 25-foot Salatia, owned by race director Miff Lauriat, came in sixth, more than 12 minutes off the pace set by Gladiator. Endeavor, Southwest Harbor’s Betsey Holtzmann’s 25-foot Ralph Stanley-built sloop, finished 13 minutes after Salatia, removing any mystery in the friendly competition between the fiberglass Salatia and wooden Endeavor.

Sailors didn’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of the fine weather. After drawing seven sloops last year, and six in 2003, eight Friendships sailed in this year’s race.

Chrissy continued to hold the lead over Gladiator and Resolute to the third mark, a portside rounding of the Bear Island bell. There, the Friendships mixed with a group of racing International One Designs, also rounding the bell, making for extremely tight sailing at the mark.

Gladiator and Resolute, which trailed by roughly a minute at the Spurling Rock bell, started gaining on Chrissy after rounding that mark. Broad reaching on a starboard tack, they overtook Chrissy by the fifth and final mark at the Greenings Ledge nun

The final results, including year built and owners, are as follows:

1) Gladiator, 32 feet, 1902, Bill and Caroline Zuber, Friendship, 2:15:20
2) Resolute, 28 feet, 1973, Charlie and Maria Burnham, Essex, Mass. 2:16:00

4) Alice E, 30 feet, 1899, Karl Brunner and Kristen Ramos, Tremont, 2:18:26
5) Surprise, 33 feet, 1964, Downeast Sailing Adventures, Bar Harbor 2:22:33
6) Salatia, 25 feet, 1969, Miff Lauriat, Southwest Harbor, 2:27:47
7) Endeavor, 25 feet, 1979, Betsey Holtzmann, Southwest Harbor, 2:40:47
8) Freedom, 28 feet, 1976, Richard and Helen Dudman, Islesford, 3:00:27
