LAMOINE — An Otis boy was badly injured on Lamoine Beach Road early Saturday morning after the car he was a passenger in went off the road and hit a tree, Maine State Police say.

Matt Peasley, 17, was in serious condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred about 5:20 a.m. when Alex Wentworth, 18, of Ellsworth, driving a Toyota Avalon, lost control of the car on a soft shoulder, said State Police Trooper Jessica Shorey.

Wentworth overcorrected and the car skidded off the road, striking a large tree, Shorey said.

Neither boy was wearing a seatbelt, said Shorey. Wentworth, an Ellsworth High School student, suffered minor scrapes and bruises. Peasley suffered a head injury and a broken leg, she said.

A LifeFlight helicopter landed at Lamoine Beach to fly Peasley to Eastern Maine Medical Center. County Ambulance and the Lamoine Fire Department responded as well.

Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the accident, Shorey said.

“It’s believed that the primary cause for the accident is speed,” said Shorey. The speed limit on Lamoine Beach Road is 40 mph.

The boys had been at Lamoine Beach with a girl, who had been following behind them in another vehicle when the crash occurred, Shorey said.

State Police Sgt. Jon Mahon said the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is reconstructing the accident. Once the reconstruction is finished, the Hancock County District Attorney will review it, Mahon said.

The car, which was a total loss, belongs to Daniel Briggs of Bangor, Mahon said.

The accident comes a little more than a week after “Every 15 Minutes” at Ellsworth High School, a two-day mock event with a staged fatal car accident in which alcohol was a factor. The cautionary dramatization was staged at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
