| BUCKSPORT —
With rain and perspiration streaming off his face,
Mike Bunker of Bucksport surged across the finish
line and pumped his fist in jubilation after
running to victory in Saturday’s Fort Knox Bay
Festival five-kilometer race.
The 22-year-old
Bunker broke the 15-minute mark with a time of 14
minutes and 54 seconds, 50 seconds faster than the
runner-up, 16-year-old Bryan Sharkey of Miami, Fla.
Sharkey, who
spends summers in Maine, was the winner at last
weekend’s annual Tremont Trot, a four-mile
competition on
Mount Desert Island.
He finished in
15:44, besting third place runner Phil LeBreton of
Bangor by eight seconds.
Despite the
driving rain that prevailed throughout the early
morning, the race drew a field of 138 runners.
Old
Town High School standout Cassie
Hintz was the top female runner, placing ninth
overall in 17:17. Lara Rand was female runner-up, placing 20th overall in
18:54.
